Not everyone has the opportunity to visit a traditional hammam on a regular basis. Don’t worry, we’ll bring the experience home for you!
Recurrence
Once a week, or once every two weeks for the most sensitive skin.
You will need...
black soap
horsehair glove or scrubbing -salts
ghassoul
henna
-argan oil or another vegetable -oil suitable for moisturizing the body, or massage oil, or body lotion
-facial oil or cream
PROCEDURE
1. Heat your bathroom to keep your skin warm throughout the hammam.
2. Rinse your body and hair with hot water.
3. Once your body has warmed up (ideally, you should wait 10-15 minutes to allow your pores to dilate), apply a thin layer of black soap all over your body, avoiding the mucous membranes.
4. Leave on for around 10 minutes, making sure the room is still warm and damp.
5. Rinse thoroughly.
6. Scrub the body using a horsehair glove or aromatized scrubbing salts, starting with the lower part of the body and working your way up, using small circular movements. Apply varying degrees of pressure, depending on skin sensitivity.
7. Rinse thoroughly.
8. Apply ghassoul mixed with orange blossom water (or water) evenly over body, face and hair. Rub the scalp to apply the ghassoul evenly over the scalp.
9. Leave for 15 minutes before rinsing.
10. Brush the scalp thoroughly to remove all the ghassoul. If any residue remains, it will continue to draw in impurities and sebum, eventually drying out the scalp and hair, and sometimes even causing dandruff.
11. Apply the henna, mixed with orange blossom water (or water), evenly over the body, and possibly the hair and face. Pure Moroccan henna is coloring. Do not leave it on for more than 5 to 10 minutes, and avoid using it on blond hair. It can be applied as a mask to strengthen dark hair, or to dye lighter hair.
12. Rinse thoroughly.
13. There is no need to apply shower gel or shampoo.
14. Conditioner can be applied.
15. On leaving the “hammam”, don’t forget to soothe and moisturize body and facial skin with a vegetable oil, massage oil or body lotion, applied to skin that is still damp!
